TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team outscored Skidmore College 24-10 in the final 7:43 of the game and the Engineers defeated the Thoroughbreds, 62-52, in a Liberty League contest at the East Campus Arena. RPI improves to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the league, while Skidmore falls to 9-3 and 3-1.

Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) drew a charge on a Skidmore player which resulted in a technical foul being called on the Thoroughbreds' bench. Wetmore made the two free throws to pull Rensselaer to within two points, 42-40, and then tied the game at 42-42 with a basket on the ensuing possession.
Skidmore took the lead back on a three-point shot by senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), but RPI scored the next five points for a 49-45 advantage. The Thoroughbreds answered by tallying the next five points for a 50-49 lead with 2:06 left, but Wetmore nailed a three point basket for a two-point edge (52-50) with just under two minutes remaining. The Engineers went on to score the next 10 points to close out the victory.
Wetmore finished with 21 points, including 11 in the final 7:43, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals in 31 minutes. Freshman
Jen Rock (Byfield, MA/Triton Regional) added 14 points and senior
Hillary McKinley (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Memorial) had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
For Skidmore, Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Technical), a senior guard, had 15 points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kavana also reached double digits in points, scoring 11.
The first half was similar to the second half – back-and-forth. The Engineers held a 21-14 lead halfway through, but the Thoroughbreds scored the next eight points to hold a 22-21 five minutes later. The teams traded baskets for the four minutes before Skidmore scored the final four points of the first half for a 30-27 lead.
Rock had 10 points and five rebounds, while Gargiso led the Thoroughbreds with 10 points.
Rensselaer returns to the court on Tuesday when it travels to Bard College for a league contest. Skidmore plays at Liberty League foe Clarkson University on Tuesday at 6pm.
