TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team saw four different players score in double figures as the Engineers defeated Vassar College, 74-59, in a Liberty League game at East Campus Arena.
The Engineers, who improved to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in the league, used a balanced attack and runs of 14-0 and 9-0 to open a 17-point halftime lead, 39-22. Vassar could not pull any closer than to within 15 points in the second half and the Brewers are now 9-6 and 3-3.
Seven different players had at least two points in the opening 20 minutes for RPI, led by senior forward
Hillary McKinley's (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Memorial) 13 points and four rebounds. Senior guard
Lauren Hayes (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) also had four rebounds, along with seven points, for the Engineers, who shot 54.5% (18 for 33) in the first half.
Vassar, which countered with a 10-0 advantage after falling behind 19-3 in the first seven minutes of the contest, saw sophomore guard Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) score 10 of her team's 22 first half points. The Brewers shot just 28.6% (10 for 35) and turned the ball over eight times to open the game.
McKinley, who entered the game ranked second to Matsuoka in Liberty League scoring with 15.4 points per game, led all scorers with 21 points. Hayes and
Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) had 12 points apiece and all three of them contributed seven rebounds apiece. Hayes also chipped in seven assists. Freshman
Jen Rock (Byfield, MA/Triton Regional) added 11 points.
For the visiting Brewers, Matsuoka, who was averaging 15.5 points per game prior to Tuesday night, scored 17 points with a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Hanna Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) added 10 points with four rebounds.
RPI is back home on Friday evening when it faces William Smith at 6pm. Vassar host league-leading St. Lawrence at 6pm on Friday.
