Hillary McKinley scored 20 points with 14 rebounds for the RPI women's basketball team in a 60-54 victory at Union Saturday. The Engineers improved to 6-4 in Liberty League play and 12-7 overall, while Union, 4-6 in the league, is 8-10.
McKinley had 10 boards on the defensive side and
Sarah Wetmore had 10 points and five rebounds.
Katie Sousa also had eight points and Lauren hayes dished out a game-high five assists with her seven points. RPI shot 37% and forced 18 turnovers in the triumph.
Union was led by Amy Loya, who scored a team-high 13 points with seven rebounds. Rachel Beaulac and Shayla Madden also had seven boards each for the Dutchwomen, who had a slight 40-39 rebounding edge. Brittney Kenney had four assists.
RPI led by as many as 12 in the first half (26-14 with 3:00 left), and took a 28-23 lead into the half. McKinley had 17 points and nine boards in the first 20 minutes.
RPI led by nine at 35-26 with 18:23 left in the second half after two free throws by Wetmore, but the Dutchwomen went on a 8-1 run in the next 5:35 and it was a two point game at 36-34. But the Engineers got it up to seven at 44-37 with 7:24 remaining and led by as many as eight at 56-48 with 2:25 left. A Kelsey McDonald layup with 28 17 seconds left made it a three point game at 57-54, but RPI made three free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
