Women's Basketball Loses to St. Lawrence

TROY, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team closed out the game on a 26-10 run and the Saints defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 76-58, in a Liberty League contest at the East Campus Arena.

St. Lawrence, which led 30-28 at halftime, held a 50-48 lead midway through the second half. The Saints then scored 26 of the final 36 points to improve to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league. St. Lawrence used a balanced attack in breaking away, as eight different players scored in that span, led by Cassie St. Hilaire's (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) five points.

Three players reached double digits in points for the visitors, led by sophomore forward Kelly Legg (Fairport, NY/Aquinas Institute), who scored a game-high 15 points with seven rebounds in 17 minutes. St. Hilaire, a sophomore guard, finished with 13 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the field and 3 of 3 from the foul line. She also had three rebounds and two assists. Iris Santoni (Florence, MA/Northampton), a senior guard, also had 13 points for St. Lawrence.

RPI, which played without its top two scorers in Hillary McKinley (volunteer medical mission in Honduras) and Sarah Wetmore (injury) for the second straight game, falls to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League.

The Engineers also had three players in double digits in points, led by freshman Jen Rock (Byfield, MA/Triton Regional), who registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists, a block and a steal in a game-high 37 minutes. Classmate Courtney Reynolds (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo), a guard, also had 12 points and sophomore forward Kyleigh Oliveira (Agawam, MA/Agawam) chipped in with 11 points.

The first half was close throughout with the teams tied, 23-23 with just under five minutes remaining. The Saints then went on a 7-1 run, but the Engineers scored the final five points to make it a two point deficit (30-28) at the break.

Reynolds had eight first half points for RPI, while Rock had five points and six rebounds. St. Lawrence was paced in the first half by Legg, who had eight points and four rebounds in 10 minutes. She also had two fouls.

Rensselaer returns to the court on Friday when it hosts league foe Union at 6pm at ECAV Arena. St. Lawrence hosts Clarkson in a Liberty League game on Tuesday night at 6pm.
