ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute women's soccer team solidified its Liberty League playoff position with a 1-0 victory over Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

RPI (10-5 overall, 6-1 Liberty League) carried play throughout, and freshman Kate Edwards (Williamsville, NY) hit the crossbar in the 43rd minute, but in general scoring chances .were few and far between for both teams.

With playoff seeding on the line, RPI started to really press forward late in the scoreless game, and it paid off in the final few minutes. Bard keeper Lena James was called for handling the ball outside of the penalty area with about five minutes left, giving RPI a direct kick from 20 yards. Senior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ) blasted a shot that glanced off a Bard defender in the wall and behind James for the eventual game-winner in the 87th minute.

The Engineers outshot Bard, 15-3, and collected four corners to Bard's one. Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA) made one save in the first half, and Deanna Amoia (Tappan, NY) picked up the win, in spite of not facing a shot in the second half.
