TROY, N.Y. – Led by a number of outstanding efforts, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving teams kicked off their 2012-13 season with a dual meet sweep at Roger Williams. The men won by a 174-120 margin, while the women were victorious, 188-111.
Leading the way for the Engineers in the season opener was senior captain
Mairead Lyons (Leominster, MA / Notre Dame), who won two individual events and was part of two relay victories. She won the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.72 and claimed the 100-fly with a time of 1:01.67. She was also part of wins in the 200-medley relay (1:58.23) and the 200-free relay (1:44.69). Freshman
Rachael Mesibov (Tappan, NY / Tappan Zee) was also part of those two relay victories, as well as individual wins in the 200-free (2:01.96) and 500-free (5:32.01).
Among those with multiple victories on the men's side were sophomore Adam Kalish (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) and senior Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA / Lafayette). Kalish won the 50-free (22.94) and the 50-fly (24.84) and helped the 200-free relay to first place (1:30.86). LeRose won the 100-fly (53.84) and swam on the victorious 200-medley relay team (1:41.34).
Both teams are back in the pool next Saturday at Ithaca College. That dual meet begins at 1pm.
