TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain Maddy Boston netted her first collegiate goal in the 11th minute, to lead the seventh-ranked Middlebury Panthers to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening in non-conference action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Panthers remain unbeaten at 7-0-1, while the Engineers, who lose for the first time in six games, fall to 7-4.

Middlebury capitalized on its first scoring chance of the game, when a deflected cross found Boston (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais) at the top of the RPI penalty area. Her left-footed strike curled into the top right corner of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The Engineers had a chance to pull even in the 15th minute after a corner kick by senior captain Nikki Goodsell (Danbury, CT/Danbury) found its way to sophomore Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton) at the far post. Her shot from inside the six was partially blocked and then saved by Panthers' junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Foody (Ottawa, ON/Ashbury).

An RPI handball on cross at the top of the box gave the Panthers a penalty kick, which junior Scarlett Kirk (San Francisco, CA/Convent of the Sacred Heart) finished into the bottom right corner of the net. The tally, which came in the 35th minute put Middlebury up 2-0.

RPI, which trailed at the half, despite a 7-3 edge in shots, opened the second half with a lot of pace, but couldn't muster a goal.

In the 52nd minute, Rensselaer junior forward Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was played into the box on the right and ripped a high shot that was held nicely by Foody. Two minutes later Korytko headed a corner wide left from just outside the six yard box.

Rothschild send a low cross through the goal mouth untouched in the 79th minute, before a Goodsell service was pushed wide by the shin of sophomore Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) four minutes later.

Foody (7-0-1) earned the win in net, making six saves, before being replaced by Jocelyn Remmert (Pelham, NY/Hackley School) in the 67th minute of play. RPI junior goalie Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) fell for the first time this season, moving to 2-1.

The Engineers are idle this weekend, but return to Liberty League play on October 12 and 13, when they visit St. Lawrence (4pm) and Clarkson (2pm), respectively. The Panthers host Hamilton on Saturday (12pm).
