SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Three first-half goals propelled the 15th-ranked Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a, 3-0, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Second Round of the NCAA Championships, this evening at Clothier Field. With the win, the Garnet improve to 16-2-2 overall, while the Engineers conclude their season with a 10-6-6 mark.
Noah Sterngold (Muncy, PA) got the hosts on the board first, when his 10th-minute shot skipped under RPI sophomore
Rob Dewald (Arlington, VA) and into the net. Sophomore Michael Stewart netted his team-leading 14th goal of the season in the 30th minute, after junior Joe Keedy () slipped a pass behind the Engineers' defense.
The Garnet extended its lead to 3-0 just before the half (44th minute), when junior Jack Momeyer (New York, NY) flicked a shot into the side netting off of a cross by classmate Geli Carabasas (Mt. Laurel, NJ).
Rensselaer, which was out-shot 15-4 in the first half had a number chances to score in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Senior centerback Mike Birk (Albertson, NY) had a shot sail wide of the target in the 51st minute. Birk then had the Engineers best opportunity to score in the 69th minute when a free-kick by junior
Joey Eilert (Wayne, NJ) was played low into the center of the penalty area. Birk's initial shot was stopped by Swarthmore junior goalkeeper Peter Maxted (Port Washington, NY), and his second was caromed away from danger.
Engineers senior
William Keddy-Hector (Driftwood, TX) turned in the club's final chance of the contest, when his 84th-minute volley skimmed over the top of the crossbar.
RPI's second round appearance was the third in school history and the first since 2009.
The Garnet advance to the Sweet 16, where they will face Amherst College at a date and time to be determined.
