TROY, N.Y. - Freshman Molly Contini scored the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner in the third period, and junior Olivia Mucha had two goals and an assist to lead the Princeton University women's hockey team to a 6-5 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECAC Hockey action at Houston Field House. The Tigers improve to 3-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the league, while the Engineers are now 2-6-1 and 0-3-0.
Contini (Arthur, ON/KW Rangers) had a 5x3 power play goal early in the first period - the game's third goal - and then had the eventual game-winner on a lunging effort at 8:11 of the third period. Mucha (West Chester, PA/Hotchkiss) assisted on Princeton's first goal, scored with 19 seconds left in the first period for a 3-2 lead and tallied again midway through the second period to once again give the visitors an advantage. The goals were her first two of the season, while the assist was her first.
The game was back-and-forth throughout with RPI taking a lead just 1:05 into the game. Freshman
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) scored from the high slot for her second goal of the season. Princeton tied the score just 2:09 later when junior Sally Butler (Etobicoke, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) knocked in a loose puck on a delayed penalty to the Engineers. Contini scored her first collegiate goal just 1:22 later and the Tigers did not trail the rest of the game.
Rensselaer's
Eleeza Cox (St. Catherine's ON/Ridley College) tied it with a power play goal at 10:38, but Mucha's first goal put Princeton back in front. She scored when she drove down the right slot and collected a cross-ice pass from Butler and found the back of the net on the backhand.
RPI again tied the game, this time on the seventh goal of the season by freshman
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride), but Mucha made it a 4-3 advantage for the Tigers.
The two teams traded goals one more time in the second period, before the Engineers tied it for the fourth time early in the third period. Senior
Kristen Jakubowski (Colorado Springs, CO/The Northwood School), who was playing her first game after missing the entire 2011-12 season due to injury, wristed a shot into the goal at the 2:51 mark.
In addition to Continie and Mucha, others from Princeton with multiple points were Butler (1 goal, 1assist) and Corey Stearns (Falmouth, MA/Noble & Greenough), who had three assists.
Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) had three assists for RPI, while Wash and Cox had a goal and an assist each.
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) stopped six of seven shots, but suffered the loss. Kimberly Newell (Vancover, BC/Kootney Ice) made 25 saves in the win for Princeton, which plays at Union College on Saturday. RPI hosts Quinnipiac University on Saturday at 4pm.
