POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar College men's soccer team opened its first weekend of Liberty League play with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on a cloudy Saturday at Gordon Field.
The game remained scoreless until junior Juliano Pereira scored his fifth goal of the season when he snapped a hard header.
The Brewers put on the pressure in the second half, and finally found the breakthrough they needed in the 59th minute when a perfectly placed corner kick from freshman midfielder Jordan Palmer found Pereira, who headed the ball into the middle right corner of the net.
Vassar narrowly missed doubling their lead in the 74th minute, when Pereira played a long through ball to junior defender Evan Seltzer, who blasted a low shot, forcing the save. However the one goal proved enough as the Brewers took the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Grimme had two saves in the win, while
Rob Dewald had three saves in the loss for the Engineers.
Vassar recorded 18 shots while RPI managed 10.
