TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team scored 40 seconds into the game and built a three-goal lead on its way to defeating Elmira College, 3-1 in a non-league game at ECAV Stadium. RPI improves to 5-3-0, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 2-5-0.

Less than a minute into the contest, Rensselaer senior Nikki Goodsell (Danbury, CT/Danbury) carried the ball down the left side and crossed it inside of 10 yards. The ball deflected off an Elmira defender and across the goal line for an own goal. Rensselaer senior Kirsten Bombardier (Colchester, VT/Colchester) made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when her header found the goal. Goodsell started the play by taking a corner kick that was punched out by goalie Megan Lowe (Leroy, NY/Leroy). The ball went to Bombardier, who was approximately 10 yards out, and she headed it over a defender and into the goal for her second tally in the last two games and third of the year.

Sophomore Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) made it 3-0 when she was left alone in front of the goal and finished a pass from Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) in the 63rd minute. The Soaring Eagles answered right back when Mollie Hamilton (Victor, NY/Victor) scored on a long shot that Rensselaer goalie Deanna Amoia (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) got a hand on but could not stop.

Amoia finished with two saves, before being replaced by Kippy Prevoznak (Rosslyn Farms, PA/Carlynton) with 5:35 left in the game. Prevoznak did not face any shots. Lowe stopped 12 shots for Elmira.

The Engineers held a 28-5 (15-3 on goal) advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Rensselaer's next scheduled game is on Friday when William Smith College, the top-ranked team in the nation, visits ECAV Stadium (4pm). Elmira hosts Utica College on Wednesday night at 7pm.
