GENEVA, N.Y.—The Rensselaer men's soccer team scored two second half goals to give the Engineers a 2-0 win over No. 24 Hobart in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field.
Rensselaer picked up its first league victory to even its conference record at 1-1 and improved to 5-3-1 overall. The Engineers ended the Statesmen's five-match win streak. Hobart is now 5-2-0 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Statesmen earned a corner in the 24th minute, and one of the Hobart players headed the ball into the back of the net, however, what appeared to be a goal was called off due to the Statesmen being whistled offsides.
The Engineers broke through in the 51st minute. Hobart was called for a foul just outside the box.
Matt Koziol took the free kick for RPI and sent a low shot through the crowd in front of the goal and past Hobart's keeper to give Rensselaer a 1-0 advantage.
The Statesmen had a chance to answer in the 63rd minute. The Engineers were called for a foul also just outside the box. First-year Marco Ronning sent Hobart's free kick slightly wide of the top right corner of the goal.
In the 83rd minute,
Tim Young scored his first goal of the season to cap the 2-0 victory for Rensselaer. Young broke by his Statesman defender for a one-on-one with the goalie and placed his shot into the right side of the goal.
Sophomore Mike Lucas played all 90 minutes in net for Hobart and stopped six shots.
Rob Dewald finished with four saves for RPI. The Statesmen held a 15-9 lead in shots and a 7-1 edge in corners.
