TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team scored two first half goals and held William Smith College to a total of two shots on goal on its way to a 2-0 victory in a Liberty League game at ECAV Stadium.

RPI has now won four straight games to improve to 6-3-0 overall. It is 2-0-0 in the league. The Herons, the seventh-ranked team in the country, fall to 6-2-1 and 1-1-0.

The Engineers opened the scoring when junior Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) collected a loose ball and scored from 16 yards out just 8:25 into the contest. RPI senior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) began the play with a through-ball that could not be controlled by either a William Smith defender or the goalkeeper and Rothschild took advantage, scoring her fifth goal of the season.

Maguire made it 2-0 when she scored on a hard shot into the top of the left corner from 35 yards out. The Herons' Chelsea Dunay (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) dove for the ball and got her hand on it but could not keep it out of the goal. It was Maguire's second of the year.

The Engineers had a solid chance to make it a 3-0 game early in the second half when sophomore Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton (AZ) headed the ball off the post and then saw her rebound, also a header, get stopped by Dunay. William Smith's best opportunity came just minutes later when one of their shots was blocked out of bounds, leading to a corner kick.

RPI goalkeeper Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) made two saves, while Dunay stopped three shots.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon for league contests. The Engineers host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at 2pm, while the Herons are at Skidmore College at 2pm. The RPI versus RIT game can be viewed live online at www.rpitv.org.
