TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team scored three second half goals and the Engineers defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 3-0 in a game between the two teams atop the Liberty League standings. RPI has now won five straight games to improve to 7-3-0 overall and a league-best 3-0-0. RIT falls to 6-4-0 and 2-1-0. (Watch RPI TV's broadcast of the game by clicking HERE.)

After a scoreless first half in which both teams controlled portions of the play, RPI freshman Kate Edwards scored on a rebound in the 52nd minute for a 1-0 lead. Edwards one-timed a loose ball from approximately eight yards out past Tigers goalkeeper Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls). Murray initially made a save on a Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton (AZ) drive but could not control the ball and Edwards put it in for her second of the season.

Sophomore Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) made it a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute when she took a drop pass from Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) and scored from eight yards out on the right side, past Murray toward the far post.  The goal was Kirk's second of the year.

Nine minutes later, Korytko, a sophomore, added a header goal, her fourth marker of the season, off a pass from junior Alex Shaw (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East).

Rensselaer junior Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) earned her second consecutive shutout, finishing with two saves. Murray had three saves.

RPI returns to ECAV Stadium on Wednesday when the Engineers host nationally-ranked Middlebury College at 7:30pm. RIT plays at nationally-ranked William Smith College on Wednesday in a league contest at 4pm.
