TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team scored just 59 seconds into the game and sophomore goalie
Kelly O'Brien stopped the 11 shots she faced as the Engineers blanked Union College 2-0 in an ECAC Hockey contest at Houston Field House. The game was the second of a home-and-home series between the two area rivals. RPI won Friday's game 2-1 in Schenectady.
The Engineers, who are now 8-15-3 overall and 6-7-1 in the league, got on the board early when junior
Toni Sanders (York, PA / Susquehanna Rapids U-19) notched her third goal of the season on a snap shot from the left faceoff circle. Freshman blueliner
Jenn Godin (Clarence Center, NY / Tabor Academy) chipped the puck up the boards to Sanders, who skated toward the goal before shooting and scoring.Â
RPI doubled its advantage at 16:09 of the first period when sophomore
Mariana Walsh (Walpole, MA / Phillips Andover) picked up a loose puck from just outside of the crease and patiently lifted a shot over a crowd of players, including Union goalie Shenae Lundberg (Peterbourough, NH / Deerfield Academy), and under the crossbar for her first career goal. Freshman
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ / New Jersey Rockets) and Godin had the assists. For Godin, the helper was her fifth point (1 goal, 4 assists) in the last three games.
The Dutchwomen, who fall to 7-16-3 and 0-11-3, had nearly two minutes of extra attacker time to end the third period but were unable to beat O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals). She earned the shutout by stopping two shots in the first period, three in the second and six in the third. Lundberg finished with 31 saves, including 13 in the first period and 11 in the third.
The Engineers and Union both travel to league foes Colgate University and nationally-ranked Cornell University for games on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm).
