GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 4 William Smith College soccer team scored two goals in the second half to secure a 2-0 win over Rensselaer in a Liberty League match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons improve to 11-1-0 and 5-0-0 in conference play, while the Engineers fall to 8-4-1 and 3-2-0 in the Liberty League.

First-year Shay Callahan (Holland Patent/Holland Patent, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and junior Madeline Buckley (Archmere Academy/Wilmington, Del.) chipped in the second William Smith tally off an assist from classmate MaryClaire Pelletier (Worcester Academy/Sutton, Mass.). Senior goalie Chelsea Dunay (Cicero-North Syracuse/Cicero, N.Y.) stopped the only shot she faced to secure her seventh shutout this season.

In the first half, the Herons held a 13-2 advantage in shots and a 6-0 lead in corners. In the 22nd minute, Buckley blasted a shot from the top of the box that went just wide of the left post. With 10:59 left in the first, Pelletier sent in a cross from the right side. She found first-year Kara Shue (Fairport/Penfield, N.Y.) at the left post. Shue's header was saved by the RPI keeper, Alex Scholz. Scholz finished with eight saves in goal for the Engineers.

RPI's one shot on goal came off a free kick from about 10 yards outside of the box. Taylor Korytko drilled a hard shot, but Dunay was there to make the immediate save.

The Herons finally broke through in the 66th minute. Callahan capitalized on an RPI turnover at midfield. She carried the ball all the way into the box and beat her defender. Callahan pushed a short shot into the left corner. It was her first collegiate goal. In the 82nd minute, Buckley added an insurance goal for William Smith. Pelletier sent a pass to the right side to find Buckley who placed her shot into the far left corner of the goal. She now leads the Herons with six goals this season.

RPI's best scoring chance of the second half came in the 62nd minute. Brooke Van Baush broke through the back line and carried the ball into the box, but her shot sailed wide left.

William Smith earned its ninth shutout this year. The Herons finished with a 10-0 advantage in corners and a 27-4 lead in shots.

William Smith will host Skidmore for another Liberty League match tomorrow, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. RPI also be in action taking on RIT in Rochester at 2 p.m.
