Swimming & Diving Sweeps RIT to Start Season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) swimming & diving teams began the 2013-14 with victories as the Engineers swept Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in a dual meet at RIT. The Engineers women posted a 163-137 win and the men were victorious, 171-124. 

Freshman Barb Long (Longs, SC / North Myrtle Beach) won both the 1000 (11:30.07) and 500 (5:31.93), while also scoring in the 500 yard backstroke (1:08.23) and in the 400 free relay (3:59.06). Classmate Sarah Schattschneider (Mt. Kisco, NY / Horace Greeley) won the 100 free with a time of 55.82 and was second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.02. She also scored in the 200 fly (2:23.59) and helped the 400 free relay team to first place (3:49.97). Siena Sara (Queensbury, NY / Queensbury), another freshman who also swam on the 400 relay, won the 100 breast (1:09.69) and 200 breast (2:30.24). 
 
Sophomore Maggie Cullather (Highland Park, IL / Highland Park) won 1 meter diving competition with a score of 236.65 and she was second off the 3 meter board (221.15).

Rensselaer's men also featured several student-athletes who were first to the wall, including junior Adam Kalish (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa). He won the 50 free (22.16) and the 100 fly (53.42) and helped the 400 medley relay team (3:43.14) to a first place finish. Freshman Triston Ferguson (Phoenix, AZ / Horizon) also swam on that relay and he won two individual events. He was first in the 200 free (1:50.17) and the 100 free (49.90). Freshmen Richard Dong (Forest Hills, NY / Hunter College HS)also had a solid debut, winning the 100 breast (1:01.35) and registering second place finishes in the 100 fly (54.73) and in the 400 medley relay (3:45.65). 

Freshman diver Mark Stein (Brewster, NY / Brewster) placed third on both boards with a 211.40 off the 1 meter and a 214..05 off the 3 meter.

The Engineers return to action next Saturday when they host Ithaca College at Robison Pool beginning at 1pm.
