TROY, N.Y. – Senior Cristina Sicari netted a first-half goal and the Hartwick College women's soccer team was able to hold on for a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening in non-league action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-6-3 overall, while the Engineers drop to 8-6-1.

Hartwick freshman Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland) won a tackle deep in RPI territory and slipped a ball into the box for Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East), who right-footed a shot into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season. The tally, which came in the 22nd minute, was all the offense the Hawks would need.

The Engineers nearly had the immediate answer, as junior captain Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton) lofted a cross towards the left side of the penalty area for senior captain Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional). Abballe rolled a shot on goal that was cleared off the line by a Hawks defender.

Rensselaer picked up the pressure in the middle stages of the second half, coming close to equalizing on a number of occasions. Senior Brooke Van Baush (Loganville, GA/Grayson) turned in one of those chances in the 60th minute, when she redirected a cross from junior Kerry White (Middleton, MA/Masconomet Regional), just wide of the net.

Seven minutes later, Korytko got on the end of a corner kick by senior captain Alex Shaw (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East), hammering a header high and wide of the target. The Engineers were then limited to a pair of long range shots in the final 15 minutes, despite attempting a season-high 12 corners.

RPI finished the game with a 17-3 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Hartwick junior goalkeeper Annie Millar (Ilion, NY/Ilion) made seven saves to improve to 2-0-1, while Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) came away with two stops at the other end of the field, dropping to 3-4-1.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit league-foe Vassar (2:30pm). The Hawks host St. John Fisher at Elmore Field on Saturday (2pm).
