TROY, NY --
Molly Zuk (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) scored the game's only goal to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 1-0 win over Vassar in Liberty League field hockey action on Wednesday evening at Harkness Field. With the win, the Engineers claim their first conference victory of the season, improving to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the league. Vassar falls to 9-5, with a 3-3 conference slate.
Zuk took an assist from
Kierstan Ryan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) in the 30th minute to score her first goal of the season. Ryan had the ball on the left side of the circle and passed it into the center, where Zuk redirected the ball into the cage past Vassar's Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N). Brelis came into the game with a 0.85 goals against average, having only allowed nine goals in 10 games this season.
After being outshot, 6-1, in the first half, the Brewers flipped the shot advantage in their direction in the second, outshooting the Engineers, 7-4, in the second. Vassar also held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners in the game, after getting just one in the first half, before limiting Rensselaer to one in the second.
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) played all 70 minutes between the pipes for RPI, making four saves, while Brellis also stopped four shots in a complete-game effort for the Brewers.
