Castleton, Vt. – Senior
Kelsey Porter scored the game's only goal late in overtime to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Castleton in a non-league game at Spartan Stadium. The Engineers improve to 7-9, having won three straight games. The Spartans fall to 11-6 and see their five-game winning streak snapped.
In overtime both teams had multiple corners and chances in front, however, RPI's
Hannah Clough and Castleton's Jessica Galatioto came up with big saves. Rensselaer finally broke through with just over two minutes left. Porter received the ball 10 yards outside the shooting circle with only Galatioto between her and the net. The senior dribbled to just inside the top of the shooting circle before ripping a hard, low shot past the charging Galatioto into the back of the cage.
RPI was the aggressor in the first half, outshooting Castleton 7-4 and forcing Galatioto to make a diving save midway through the period. The Spartans also had their chances, as a hard shot in the 26th minute hit the post before bouncing back into the field of play.
In the second, the Engineers owned a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners but only recorded four shots. Castleton thought they had the go-ahead score on a rip following a penalty corner midway through the half, but the Spartans player was ruled outside of the shooting circle and it didn't count.
Castleton was outshot 14-12 in the contest but actually owned an 8-7 shot advantage through the second half and overtime as the team fell to 11-6 on the year. The Engineers improved to 7-9 overall with the win.
Galatioto finished the game with four saves while Clough made six stops in net.
