TROY, N.Y. – Seniors
Brooke Van Baush,
Sara Rothschild and
Giana Abballe all found the back of the net to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence University, this afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineer improve to 6-2-1 overall (1-0 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 6-2-2 (0-2 Liberty League).
Van Baush (Loganville, GA/Grayson) got the hosts off to a quick start when she received a pass from junior
Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) and lofted a shot over St. Lawrence senior goalkeeper Andrea Strauss (Wilmette, IL/North Shore Country Day) for a goal, just 26 seconds in. The tally was her first of the season.
The Engineers made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, when Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) corralled a rebound just left of the six-yard box and hammered home a shot with the outside of her right foot. Strauss was only able to get her fingertips on the ball as it made its way into the top right corner. Rothschild's marker was her team-leading sixth of the year.
St. Lawrence sophomore Samantha Rock (Milton, VT/Milton) brought the visitors to within 2-1 in the 36th minute, when she fought through a scrum and scored from less than two feet out. A corner kick by freshman Taylor Goldsborough (Williston, CT/Champlain Valley) dropped inside the six for Rock, who tapped in her third of the season.
A perfectly placed cross from the left flank, by senior captain
Alex Shaw (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East), found the head of fellow captain and classmate
Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional), who finished into the left side of the net. The tally, which was her second of the year, gave Rensselaer a 3-1 cushion in the 54th minute of play.
RPI freshman goalkeeper
Alex Scholz (Kapolei, HI/Punahou) improved to 5-0 after playing the first 45 minutes. She was forced to make one save, while senior
Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) did not face a shot on goal in the second half. Strauss (3-1-1) finished with three saves on the day.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Clarkson University at East Campus Stadium (1pm). The game will be broadcast live on 91.5 FM, WRPI (www.wrpi.org) and on RPI TV (www.rpitv.org).
