TROY, N.Y. – Junior Tim Terrezza scored the game's only goal, late in the second half, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Union College, this evening in Liberty League action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-4 overall (3-1 Liberty), while the Dutchmen drop to 9-2-1 (2-2 Liberty).

Terrezza (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute, after a cross from the right flank was headed off the crossbar by classmate Matt Koziol (Poughkeepsie, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt). The ball ricocheted back into play for Terrezza who leaped and nodded in the eventual game-winner. The tally was his second of the season.

Union's lone opportunity following the RPI goal came in the 88th minute, when junior Will Poetzsch's (North Chatham, NY/Ichabod Crane) attempt from 25 yards was blocked by the Rensselaer defense.

The Engineers had two quality scoring chances in the opening stanza, including a rocket of a shot by junior midfielder Tyler Kessler (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) in the 30th minute. Kessler's try was sent towards the right side of the net, before Union junior goalkeeper Ryan Carter (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) got horizontal to make the fingertip save.

Eight minutes later, sophomore Matt Carberry (Auburn, NY/Auburn) settled a cross from the left in the center of the penalty area, before ripping a half volley over the top of the net.

Rensselaer held a 5-2 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes, including a 1-0 edge in shots on goal.

Koziol nearly put the hosts on top in the 58th minute, when he headed a corner kick service from senior Joey Eilert (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) a few feet wide of the right post.

RPI junior captain and goalie Rob Dewald (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) finished with two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season, while Carter stopped two shots for the Dutchmen.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Bard for a conference match (2pm). Union hosts Hobart on Saturday (2pm).
