SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over RPI under the lights at College Park Field on Wednesday evening. With the win the Dutchwomen move to 6-3 on the season while the Engineers fall to 7-3-1.

The Dutchwomen opened up the scoring early in the first when junior forward Mollie Gilchrist tallied her second goal of the season. After receiving a feed from junior defenseman Julia Shively, Gilchrist fended off a defender and chipped the ball over the sprawling goaltender, who was out along penalty arc challenging the shot. The ball dribbled into the net just outside of the chasing defenders' reach to give the Dutchwomen an early 1-0 lead.

The Engineers would apply pressure to the Union defense but junior goaltender Allison Brustowicz stood strong.  Brustowicz made a perfectly timed sprawling save with 18 minutes remaining in the first half to keep Union in the lead. Despite back and forth action in the rest of the first half, the half would end with the Dutchwomen leading 1-0.

The Engineers started out the second half by replacing goaltender Steph Vargas with goaltender Alex Scholz. Despite outshooting the Dutchwomen 6-2 in the second half, the Engineers couldn't beat Brustowicz, who made three big saves down the stretch to lead the Dutchwomen to victory. With six minutes remaining in the game, Brustowicz made a juggling save on a bouncing cross from the left side.

In total Brustowicz made 5 saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Vargas did not make a save in the first half and Scholz registered the only Engineers save in the second half.

Rensselaer hosts Bard on Saturday at East Campus Stadium (1pm).
