TROY, N.Y. - Vassar College outscored Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 7-2 in the final 2:10 to pull out a 61-57 victory over the Engineers in a Liberty League women's basketball game at East Campus Arena. The Brewers, who held a 55-36 edge in rebounding, improve to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the league and remain in the chase for first place in the standings. RPI falls to 11-9 and 5-6.
The visitors led for the majority of the second half before Rensselaer gained the lead, its first since 27-26 at 4:49 of the first half, on a
Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln Sudbury Regional) basket with 2:10 left. Vassar followed with baskets by Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ / Immaculate Heart Academy) and an up-and-under made shot by Nyah Berg (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln Sudbury Regional) for a three-point advantage (58-55) with a minute to play.
Wetmore countered with a layup 12 seconds later, but a layup by Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT / Nonnewaug) with the shot clock winding down and only 18.5 seconds remaining pushed the Brewers' lead back to three points (60-57). Wetmore attempted to tie the game with an off-balanced three-pointer that was off the mark. Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT / Burlington) grabbed the rebound and made one free throw after being fouled for the final margin.
Vassar led 32-29 at halftime and extended its advantage to eight points (44-36) with 12:30 to go before the Engineers fought back to go in front. Wetmore, who sat out six minutes after picking up her fourth personal foul midway through the second half, scored six of her game-high 22 points to give RPI the lead.
The Brewers were led in scoring by junior Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA / John F. Kennedy), who had 16 points with four assists and three steals. O'Connell had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Two others, Senftleber and Drakeley also reached double digits in rebounding, collecting 10 apiece. Senftleber chipped in with nine points, while Drakeley scored five.
With her 22 points, Wetmore, the league's leading scorer entering the contest (19.5 points per game), moved into fourth place in school history in career points with 1,431. She is one point behind Kristin Kaczynski '04 for third all-time. Wetmore added 10 rebounds with three assists and four steals in 28 minutes. Sophomore
Jen Rock (Byfield, MA / Triton Regional) had 12 points and classmate
Amanda Lynch (Middletown, NY / J. Burke Catholic) added six points and nine rebounds.
