EWING, N.J. – Junior midfielder Taylor Korytko scored two goals on three shots to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 5-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference women's soccer action on Friday afternoon at The College of New Jersey's Soccer Complex. RPI opens up the season at 1-0 for the first time since 2010, while Stevens stands at 0-1 to start 2013.
Freshman Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa) got the scoring started for the Engineers just three minutes into play, taking an assist from Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ / Northern Valley Regional) on a cross in front of the net. Late in the 19th minute, Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) doubled the RPI advantage, as Winslow passed the ball from the right side, which Rothschild redirected into the top of the net. Stevens cut the lead to one at 35:05, getting an unassisted tally from Gabby Mathelier, and the score was set at 2-1 at the half.
Coming out of the break, Korytko tallied the first of her two scores within the first seven minutes of action. Alex Shaw (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) took a corner kick for the Engineers, which Korytko knocked past Stevens' goalkeeper Evelyn Ting at 52:52. Less than three minutes later, Shaw set up another goal with a corner kick, this time by Abballe, who ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the net. Korytko added her second goal of the day in the 67th minute, getting an assist by Shelby Stromerson (Snohomish, WA / Glacier Peak), putting the Engineers ahead by the 5-1 margin, which held through the completion of regulation.
Senior Steph Vargas (Fogelsville, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) played 75 minutes in goal for RPI, making one save. Freshman Alex Scholz (Kapolei, HI / Punahou) made her collegiate debut for the Engineers, playing the final 15 minutes in goal and stopping two shots by the Ducks. Ting was in goal for all 90 minutes for Stevens, making four saves.
RPI outshot the Ducks, 17-10, including a 9-4 shots-on-goal advantage.
RPI will return to action on Saturday for the second day of play at the TCNJ Classic, taking on the host Lions at 4:30 p.m. TCNJ was ranked #23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III Pre-Season Poll.
