Engineers drop first game of 2013 despite significant edge in shots

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season, 1-0, at the hands of Berkeley College, In the final game of the Union Soccer Classic. With the win, the Knights improve to 1-1, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.

The only goal of the game came in the waning moments of the first half when Berkeley midfielder Daniel Viceli booted a 30-yard bomb off a free kick from the left sideline that found its way through traffic and to the back of the net. The shot barely beat the halftime buzzer as the goal was officially scored at the 44:56 minute-mark.

RPI was unable to find the equalizer as time wound down. The Engineers attempted nine shots in the second half, forcing Berkeley goalkeeper Pierce Langlois to make 5 down the stretch. Senior Ryan Gracy recorded a team-high four shots for the Engineers.

Langlois shut down the Rensselaer offense by making nine saves on 19 shot attempts. Langlois picked up his first win of the season after suffering a defeat to Union in the first game of the Union Soccer Classic. RPI goalkeeper Rob Dewald made five saves in the game.
