TROY, NY -- Head coach Bridget LaNoir earned her 100th career win as the mentor of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team, as the Engineers defeated St. John Fisher, 3-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Harkness Field. With the victory, RPI improves to 3-2 on the season, while the Cardinals drop to 3-2.
Rensselaer scored the only goal of the first half before the 10-minute mark of the period, as Anglea Cascio (Wyndmoor, PA/Springside School) took an assist from
Molly Zuk in the center of the circle and shot the ball straight into the cage. The Engineers outshot the Cardinals, 7-3, in the half, and held onto their one-goal lead through the completion of the stanza.
RPI struck once again early in the second period, as Zuk recorded her second assist of the day in the 53rd minute. This time, the junior forward would pass the ball ahead to
Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), who finished with a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage.Â
St. John Fisher would get on the board in the 66th minute with an unassisted tally from sophomore forward Elizabeth Cusack (Ganesvoort, NY/South Glens Falls). The Cardinal then unleashed a huge offensive attack, getting multiple shots off on each possession, with each shot being thwarted by RPI goalkeeper
Hannah Clough (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional).
The Engineers regained control of the ball, and on the next offensive possession, Fisher was called for a foul in the circle, giving RPI its sixth penalty corner of the game. The Engineers capitalized, and Zuk recorded her third assist on the day, passing the ball into
Kelsey Porter (Quechee, VT/Hartford), whose shot was tipped into the goal by
Sarah Krolus (Westminster, MD/Garrison Forest School), giving RPI the 3-1 final score.
With the barrage of shots at the end of the game, Fisher ended up outshooting RPI, 18-17, while both teams ended up with six penalty corners apiece. Clough continued her strong play between the pipes for the Engineers, finishing with nine saves, while Cardinal goalkeeper Danielle Famolaro (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) finished with three saves for Fisher.
RPI will return to action on Saturday evening at Kean University it New Jersey (5pm).
