TROY, N.Y. – Senior Sara Rothschild scored in the first minute of the contest to lead the 21st-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz, in non-league action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Hawks drop to 1-2-2.

Following a 95-minute lightning delay, Rensselaer struck quickly when senior Brooke Van Bausch (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) found Rothschild on the ride side of the penalty area for her second goal of the year. The tally, which turned out to be the eventual game-winner, came just 33 seconds into the game.

Freshman striker Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added an insurance goal in the 34th minute after sophomore Coley Mowder (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) found her streaking into the box. Winslow flicked a header into the right side of the net for her second on the season.

The Engineers took a 7-3 shots edge into halftime, as well as a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Rensselaer continued to carry the play in the second stanza, creating a few early chances. Junior Emily Eastman (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) and Winslow each saw shots turned away by Hawks' sophomore goalkeeper Krysten Kane (Macedon, NY/Wayne Central) within the first 10 minutes of play.

New Paltz nearly pulled to within a goal in the 77th minute, but a header by junior Bryce Kristall (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) found its way over the crossbar. The Engineers finished with a 17-8 edge in shots, while New Paltz won the corner kick battle, 6-5.

RPI freshman goalkeeper Alex Scholz (Kapolei, HI/Punahou) recorded her first collegiate shutout, while improving to 2-0 in the season. She was forced to make just three saves, while Kane finished with seven stops at the other end of the field.

The Engineers conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday, when they host Castleton State for a non-league match at East Campus Stadium (5pm). The game will be broadcast live on RPI TV and online at www.rpitv.org. The Hawks travel to Bard on Friday (7pm).
