Box Score
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior
Sara Rothschild scored three goals to lead the 19th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over New York University (NYU), this evening in non-league action from Gaelic Park. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Violets drop to 3-2-1.
Rensselaer struck first, when freshman
Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) corralled a loose ball in the NYU penalty area and found Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayette-Manlius) alone in front of goal, for the 1-0 lead. They tally, came in the 17th minute.
The hosts answered four minutes later on a free kick, 25 yards from goal. Senior Erin Ahmed (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy) hit a high ball that eluded Engineers freshman goalkeeper
Alex Scholz (Kapolei, HI/Punahou) and found its way into the side netting. The 21st minute marker was Ahmed's third on the year.
The Engineers broke open what was a tightly contested match in the second half, as Winslow and Rothschild combined to give the visitors the lead for good in the 62nd minute. Once again pressuring the NYU defense, Winslow blocked a clearing attempt by Violets' freshman goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River). The ball defected to the right of the six, where Rothschild ran on and finished for her second of the game.
RPI combined beautifully to go ahead 3-1 in the 70th minute, as Winslow and junior
Kerry White (Middleton, MA/Masconomet Regional) set up Rothschild for her third of the contest and fifth of the season.
White then turned in a fine individual effort, dribbling the ball from the Engineers side of midfield to the top of the Violets' penalty area, before rifling home her first collegiate tally. The goal, which capped the scoring for the Engineers, came in the 74th minute.
Scholz finished with three saves in 82 minutes, while classmate
Lex Jimenez (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) had two stops in the final eight minutes. Steinberg had four saves in 71 minutes, before sophomore Arianna Strome (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) made one save in 19 minutes.
The Engineers continue their road trip on Saturday, when they travel to SUNY Cortland (1pm).
