SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Dani DeGregory recorded a hat trick and two assists for Skidmore as the Thoroughbreds defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 8-0, in Liberty League field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. RPI drops to 3-4 overall, with an 0-1 conference record, while Skidmore improves to 6-1, with a 1-0 record after the league opener for both teams.
Along with DeGregory's 11 points, Skidmore got two goals and two assists from Kelly Blackhurst, while Melanie Webb, Krista Lamoreaux and Alex Hagney all chipped in with one goal apiece.
The Engineers put the Thoroughbreds under pressure in the opening minutes of the contest but Skidmore goalkeeper Haley McDougall kept the game level, making back-to-back kick saves on shots from Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) and denying Sarah Krolus (Westminster, MD / Garrison Forest School) on the ensuing penalty corner.
Blackhurst gave Skidmore the only lead it would need with an unassisted tally in the 15th minute, as she dribbled past two defenders and slotted home her 10th goal of the season. DeGregory doubled the lead 15 seconds later, tucking home a backhand shot.
The Engineers defense managed to keep the Thoroughbreds off the score sheet for the remainder of the first half, but Skidmore attacked early and often in the second.
Skidmore outshot RPI 23-7 and owned a 17-4 advantage in penalty corners. Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) stopped 10 shots in goal for the Engineers, while McDougall made six saves in the win for the Thoroughbreds.
RPI will return to action on Friday, Sept. 27, visiting William Smith College. The Liberty League contest will start at 4pm.
