ITHACA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team scored three times in a 10-minute span, including two goals from junior Matt Koziol, and the Engineers defeated Ithaca College, 4-2 in a non-league game.
Sophomore Esmir Hadzic came off the bench to open the scoring for the visitors, notching his first of the season off an assist from classmate Nathaniel Gunderson in the 25th minute. RPI held a 1-0 lead at halftime with the help of an 8-3 edge in shots. The Engineers put three shots on goal, while the Bombers did not reach goalkeeper Rob Dewald.
Ithaca's Max Bjork tied the score just 2:47 into the second half before Rensselaer scored in the 52nd, 58th and 61st minutes. Sophomore Matt Carberry put RPI back in front before Koziol connected with Joey Eilert for back-to-back goals and a commanding three-goal advantage.
Adam Goldstein scored in the 81st minute for the final margin.
RPI again held an 8-3 advantage in shots in the half, finishing with a 16-6 final difference. Eight of Rensselaer's shots were on goal, while the Bombers had two on net.
The Engineers, who are now 2-1, make their home debut on Saturday at 7pm against Ramapo. Ithaca, which is 0-2, plays at Muhlenberg on Saturday at 4pm.
