SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Angela Botiba and Jordyn Wartts both recorded double-doubles to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 60-51, in a conference matchup Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
Botiba scored a game-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds and Wartts added 14 points and a game-high 14 boards. Amber Holgate chipped in with 13 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The Engineers, who led for the first 10 minutes of the game, got 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals from junior
Amanda Lynch. Sophomore
Ashley Clough added 11 points and a team-best nine rebounds. She also blocked three shots.
The Engineers opened up a 14-9 lead midway through the first half, but Holgate and Botiba combined for 10 unanswered points to give the Thoroughbreds their first lead (16-14) with 7:56 remaining in the first. They continued to build on the momentum with baskets from Wartts and Ella Scheuerell giving them an eight-point cushion (26-18) with just under three minutes to play in the first.
Jackie Sortor's layup helped keep RPI it close, sparking a 6-2 run late in the first to cut the deficit to four at 32-28 at halftime.
Skidmore restored its eight-point lead on back-to-back jumpers from Botiba and Molly McLaughlin to start the second half, but the Engineers battled back, tying the game (43-43) with a 7-0 run capped by a
Courtney Reynolds three-pointer.
Wartts and Botiba each made key shots on the next two Thoroughbreds possessions to make it 47-43. Reynolds cut the Skidmore lead to two with 8:31 to play, but the Thoroughbreds held on, outscoring the Engineers 13-6 over the final eight minutes for the nine-point win.
Skidmore shot 39-percent (23-59) for the game, while RPI finished at 29.2-percent (19-65). The Thoroughbreds outrebounded the Engineers 34-27.
RPI is home on Saturday afternoon at 2pm against Clarkson University. Skidmore faces Union College at the same time.
