TROY, N.Y. - In the first dual meet of the spring semester, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's & women's swimming & diving teams were defeated by Union College at Robison Pool. The Dutchmen won 136-107, while the Dutchwomen posted a 138-102 victory.

For the Engineers, freshman Barb Long posted the team's first win of the evening when she captured the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:00.50. Mike Rizzo was RPI's first male to be the first to touch the wall in an event when he won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.12. 

Senior Nate Hosking won the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 4:46.66 to go with a second place finish in the 1000 (9:55.33). Long also had a runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:19.73) and the 200 medley relay (1:55.71).

Other standouts in the pool for RPI were Kathleen Bolton, David James and David Gardiner, who had season bests in each of his events.

Off the diving board, sophomore Maddie Miller won both the 1 meter competition (248.35) and the 3 meter (271.25). In fact, the Engineers had each of the top four competitors in the 1 meter and the top three in the 3 meter. Sophomore Maggie Cullather finished second off both with scores of 240.85 and 232.40, respectively.

Freshman Mark Stein won the 1 meter men's competition with a score of 256.55 and he finished third off the 3 meter diving board (251.60). 

Action continues at Robison Pool on Saturday at noon when the Engineers women host the RPI Invitational.
