Lauren Wash netted a pair of goals and junior goaltender
Kelly O'Brien stopped all 18 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a, 3-0, victory over Union College, this afternoon at Messa Rink. With the win, the Engineers complete the weekend sweep and improve to 10-11-2 overall (6-5-1 ECAC Hockey). The Dutchwomen drop to 8-15-1 (3-9-0 ECAC Hockey).
After a scoreless first period in which Rensselaer held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots on goal, Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) scored twice in the second, to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Wash slammed in a shot from the low slot at 11:35 of the frame to open the scoring. The power-play tally came seconds after an Engineers' 5-on-3 man advantage had expired.
RPI made it 2-0 at 17:26 of the second, when Wash netted her second of the game and team-leading 11th of the season.
Senior captain
Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U) buried an empty-net goal at 19:30 of the third to cap the scoring for Rensselaer. The Engineers killed off all seven Union power-plays, including one on the final two minutes to help secure the victory.
O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) made seven saves in each of the second and third periods, including eight on the penalty kill. Union junior netminder Shenae Lundberg (Peterborough, NH/Deerfield Academy) stopped 19 shots at the other end of the ice.
Rensselaer is back on the ice next weekend, when it travels to Dartmouth and sixth-ranked Harvard on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively.
