TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Matt Koziol scored a pair of goals to lead the 20th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Bard College, this evening on Senior Night at East Campus Stadium. Also Homecoming & Reunion Weekend, the Engineers improve to 9-2-2 overall (4-1 Liberty League), while the Raptors drop to 4-9 (0-4 Liberty League).
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, in which the Engineers out-shot Bard 5-2, junior midfielder
Matt Carberry (Auburn, NY/Auburn) netted the only goal the hosts needed, when he claimed a loose ball at the top of the penalty area and firing a shot into the left side of the net for his fifth of the season. The tally, which came in the 54th minute, was assisted by classmate
Esmir Hadzic (Burlington, VT/Burlington)
Koziol (Poughkeepsie, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) created a two-goal cushion in the 67th minute, after the Engineers drew a free kick just outside the box. Koziol's hit a right-footed shot that dipped just under the crossbar and into the right corner of the net.
Sophomore
Dylan Weitz (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) set up RPI's third goal with a corner kick in the 69th minute. His in-swinging service from the left found the head of Koziol, who snuck in for his second of the game and fifth of the year.
Less than two minutes later, senior
Tim Terrezza (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) capped scoring when buried a left-footed finish from just inside the penalty area. Receiving a ball from freshman
Isaac Dugas (Deerfield, NH/Concord), Terrezza finished past Bard junior goalkeeper Daniel Gagne (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), who had come out of the net to try and cut down the angle.
RPI senior keeper
Rob Dewald (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) earned the victory in net to improve to 7-2-2. He made one save, while sophomore
Alex Kessler (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem), who came on in the 67th minute, was not tested. Gagne finished with two stops.
The Engineers are back in action next Friday and Saturday, when they travel to RIT (4pm) and Hobart (2pm), respectively. Bard visits St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm).
