ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT (4-9-1, 2-3-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 by No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon. The Tigers are 13-14-5 all time versus the Engineers, and are 0-2-2 since joining the Liberty League in 2011.
Shots were 11-10 in favor of RIT, who fired two corner kicks to just one for Rensselaer. Mark Reeves took the loss in net for RIT making two saves.
Alex Kessler picked up the win for the Engineers making one save.
Rensselaer took an early lead on
Pat Noonan's goal in the third minute. In a scramble in front of the RIT net, Noonan gathered the loose ball, turned and fired a shot into the near corner for his first of two goals on the afternoon.
RIT had a chance in the ninth minute when Geno Rocco fed Danny Bloshkin with a through-ball that Bloshkin volleyed right at Kessler who made the save.
RIT broke through with a goal in the 15th minute from Michael Vincelli. The Tigers applied the pressure on the Engineers defense with shots from Bloshkin and Mike Reverdatto.
Reverdatto got the ball back and sent in a service that Rueben Marquez headed on net. Kessler made the save but the rebound went right to Vincelli who tapped a shot into the right corner, tying the score at 1-1.
Bloshkin had a great chance later in the first half when he fired a shot from 18 yards out that bended around the RPI defender. Kessler dove and made the save keeping the game tied 1-1 at the half.
Noonan struck again just after halftime when he knocked in a shot off assists from
Matt Koziol and
Nathaniel Gunderson in the 52nd minute giving the Engineers a 2-0 lead.
Esmir Hadzic put the game away with his goal in the 64th minute, making it 3-1 Rensselaer. He fired a bending shot from 18 yards out around a diving Reeves and into the far right corner.
Kurt Spiegel had a chance with a little less than 20 minutes to play, but Kessler came off his line and intercepted the pass before Spiegel could get a shot off.
RIT returns to action tomorrow afternoon when the Tigers host Skidmore College at Tiger Stadium (2pm). The Engineers visit Hobart tomorrow (2pm).
