THE FACEOFF
Rensselaer continue the non-conference portion of its schedule by heading out west to play the University of Denver Pioneers ... The game Friday night is 9:30 p.m. ET ... Saturday's puck-drop is 9:00 p.m. ET.

THE SERIES
The Engineers have faced the Pioneers 14 times all-time ... RPI is 1-12-1 (.107) in those contests, it's lowest percentage against any Division 1 school ... RPI has a 1-8-0 record in Denver ... Under Seth Appert, the 'Tute is 1-2-1 in four meetings against the Pios.

RETURNING TO DENVER
Seth Appert, the 12th head men's hockey coach at RPI, spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at Denver ... The Pioneers averaged over 23 wins per year and captured two NCAA Championships, three WCHA playoff championships and two WCHA regular-season titles in his time ... He individually coached one All-America, two All-WCHA honorees, two WCHA Playoff MVPs and two Frozen Four Most Outstanding Players

Rensselaer assistant coach Bryan Vines was a defenseman for the Pioneers ... He captained the team as a senior in 2001-02 when it won the WCHA regular season championship, the playoff championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament ... He was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award — the third of his career — as well as the Most Inspirational Player Award and the Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Year for all DU student-athletes.

COACHING CONNECTION
The Pioneers are coached by Jim Montgomery, who was an assistant coach for Seth Appert and the Engineers for four years (2006-07 to 2009-10) ... A graduate of Maine, he ranks among the leaders in NCAA hockey history in all-time points (301) and assists (198) ... Following Montgomery's time in Troy, he led the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL, where he coached RPI senior defenseman Luke Curadi and junior forward Milos Bubela before attending Rensselaer ... Curadi and Montgomery won the league's championship together.

GO WEST
This will be the farthest west the Engineers have played since the Brice Alaska Gold Rush Tournament in Fairbanks, Alaska on October 16-17, 2009 ... The last time RPI played in the state of Colorado was October 8-9 2010, tying and losing at Colorado College.
