Taylor Korytko scored twice and
Rachel Tietzen once, all in the second half, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Instutute (RPI) women's soccer team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 3-0, in a Liberty League game at ECAV Stadium. The Engineers improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the league, while the Tigers fall to 5-3-5 and 1-2-2.
Following a scoreless first half in which RPI held a 6-3 advantage in shots, Kortyko (Chandler, AZ / Hamilton) needed just 2:41 to put the home team in front. A midfielder, she collected a rolling cross from
Dali Alarian (Folsom, CA / Vista del Lago) and scored from the far post. Tietzen (Kelowna, BC / Kelowna Secondary School) doubled the Engineers' lead when she put a rebound of a
Stephanie May (Windham, NH / Central Catholic) shot across the goal line in the 70th minute. It was the first goal of the year for Tietzen. Kortyko tallied her sixth of the season when her shot from 40 yards out dropped under the crossbar but over the goalkeeper less than five minutes after Tietzen's tally.
Rensselaer finished with a 14-8 edge in shots, including 9-4 on goal, and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA / Briar Woods) started and earned the win, making six saves in 82:53. She was relieved by
Alex Scholz (Kapolei, HI / Punahou) with 7:07 to play. Senior Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) had four saves on seven shots in 79:12 before Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA / Haverford) came into the contest. Neither replacement goalie made a save.
The Engineers, who are second in the Liberty League standings, host first place William Smith on Saturday at 2pm at ECAV Stadium. The defending national champion Herons, who are ranked eighth in the nation, are 10-2-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the conference.
