ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior captain
Amanda Lynch matched a career-high with 25 points, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team fell to SUNY Oneonta, 74-66, this evening at the Holiday Inn Classic, hosted by Hartwick College. With the win, the Red Dragons improve to 2-1, while the Engineers drop to 2-2.
Lynch (Middletown, NY/John. S Burke Catholic) was an efficient 9 of 14 from the floor, including 1 for 1 from the three-point line. She was also 6 for 6 from the free throw line, with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior
Ashley Clough (West Chesterfield, NH/Keene) chipped in with 13 points, while senior captain
Courtney Reynolds (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) had eight.
The Red Dragons were led offensively by Sarah Longto and Lyteshia Price, who recorded 20 and 19 points, respectively. Tyra Harrison also reached double-figures off the bench, netting 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting.Â
Oneonta opened up a nine-point lead (35-26) after 20 minutes of play, thanks to 55.6% shooting from the floor. The Engineers shot just 27.0% in the opening stanza. The Red Dragons lead ballooned to as large as 22 points with 8:41 to play, before RPI started its comeback.
The Engineers chipped away at the deficit slowly, thanks to 18 Red Dragon turnovers. They drew to within nine points (70-61) on a three by Lynch with 35 seconds left and got as close as seven before the final horn sounded.
Oneonta won the rebound battle 50-33, while shooting 4 of 10 from three-point territory. RPI finished 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they face tournament host Hartwick (2pm).
