TROY, N.Y. – Former Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey standout Jordan Smelker '14 was drafted by the Boston Blades of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) on Tuesday. Selected in the 10th Round, she will have the opportunity to the join the Blades, who open their 2014-15 schedule in early November.   
 
Smelker becomes the fourth Engineers alumnae to be drafted into the CWHL, joining forward Whitney Naslund '10, goaltender Sonja van der Bliek '11 and defenseman Andie Le Donne '13. Naslund was also a draft choice of the Blades.
 
In 136 career games at RPI, Smelker scored 34 goals and assisted on 52 more for 86 points. She ranks fifth in school history in games played and is just the second player to record 50 or more assists since the Engineers played their first full Division I schedule in 2006-07. She ranks third in points behind Naslund (105) and Alisa Harrison '12 (95) in the DI record books.
 
Smelker totaled 19 points during the 2013-14 season, including five goals and a team-high 14 assists. Playing in 31 games, she netted two power-play goals and was assessed 14 minor penalties for 28 minutes.
 
Appearing in 20 ECAC Hockey contests, Smelker netted three goals to go along with 10 assists for 13 points. A former standout with Team Alaska 19U, she had one man-advantage tally and took 11 penalties for 22 minutes. The Engineers were 4-1 when she scored a goal and 7-7-1 when she recorded a point. On the defensive side, she had 19 blocks in conference play.
 
During the 2012-13 campaign, Smelker recorded nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. As a sophomore, she had a team-high 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists. She was second on the team in scoring during her freshman year, netting 10 goals and adding 10 assists for 20 points.
 
Smelker earned a number of team accolades at Rensselaer, including the team's Rookie of the Year, Bob Conway Scholar-Athlete and Most Valuable Player Award. Graduating with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, she was a multiple Dean's List selection as well as an ECAC Hockey All-Academic honoree.  
 
Founded in 2007, the CWHL will begin its eighth season this fall. The league is composed of current and former United States and Canadian National Team players, as well as former NCAA stars from across the country.
