Hannah Clough with just eight seconds to go in regulation to give St. John Fisher a 2-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Growney Stadium. With the loss, RPI falls to 1-3, while the Cardinals improve to 4-2 overall.
Cusack, who scored both of Fisher's goals, put the Cardinals on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal just 3:51 into play. Fisher held onto the one-goal lead for the remainder of the first half, and throughout most of the second, before the Engineers tied the score at 1-1.
Celia D'Agostino (Saratoga Springs, NY / Saratoga Springs) passed the ball from the left corner into the circle, where
Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) shot the ball into the far post with just under 15 minutes left to play.
The two teams battled for the remainder of the time, until Cusack connected on the go-ahead goal in the final ten seconds. Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) made a stop on Cusack's inital shot, but Cusack gathered the rebound and found the back of the cage.
The Engineers outshot St. John Fisher, 23-9, in the game, and held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners. Clough recorded three saves between the pipes for RPI, while Danielle Famolaro finished with seven stops for the Cardinals.
Rensselaer will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, hosting Liberty League foe Skidmore at 1 p.m. at Harkness Field.
