2014 ScheduleTROY, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Coley Mowder netted her first goal of the year to earn the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team a 1-1 draw with SUNY Oneonta, this evening in non-league play at East Campus Stadium. With the tie, the Engineers move to 2-3-1, while the Red Dragons are 1-4-1.
Mowder (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) buried a header in the 68th minute, directly from a well-placed corner kick by classmate
Shelby Stromerson (Snohomish, WA/Glacier Park). The goal was the third of Mowder's career.
Senior
Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) had an opportunity to give the hosts a lead in the 76th minute, when a mishit Red Dragons clearance fell to her at the top of the box, but her solidly struck shot went over the crossbar.
The two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 through 90 minutes, sending the game to overtime. Mowder turned in the lone scoring chance for RPI in the opening 10 minutes extra time, when her right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area twisted wide left of the net.
In the second OT session, Oneonta saw junior Erika Berry (North Bellmore, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) get a shot off from 25 yards, but it did not test RPI freshman goalkeeper
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods). That attempt, which came in the 108th minute, was the lone shot on goal for either team in the frame.
Oneonta took an early lead in the game, thanks to junior Caitlyn LaPier's (Chazy, NY/Chazy) first goal of the season. Freshman Laura Rolston (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) saw her try from distance carom off the underside of the crossbar and into the path of the onrushing LaPier, who carried the ball into the net with her body.
Junior Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) nearly gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute, but her close range effort went over the bar. Three minutes later, Kirk had a shot at the other end of the field that was right at Red Dragons junior keeper Rori Stark (Brewster, NY/Brewster).
Senior captain
Taylor Korytko (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) recorded two of her game-high six shots in the 36th minute, but her header and follow up shot were kept out Stark.
Riopelle (2-3-1) finished with four saves, while Stark (1-2-1) had three stops, which all came in the opening 45 minutes. Each team notched 12 shots in the game, while Rensselaer finished with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, when they host Cortland at East Campus Stadium (1pm). Oneonta visits Allegheny College on Saturday (1pm).
