Cori Winslow redirected a long free kick into the left side of the net 2:15 into sudden death overtime to give visiting RPI (5-3-1) a 1-0 victory over the University of Rochester in women's soccer at Edwin Fauver Stadium Saturday night.
The Engineers earned a free kick 10 yards over midfield early in the first extra period.
Taylor Korytko hit a long ball towards the right post with teammates charging. A Rochester defender jumped just shy of heading the ball away. Winslow got there and touched it past onrushing Rochester goalkeeper Aubrey Jaicks into the lower left hand corner. It was Winslow's third goal of the season, all of them gamewinners.
RPI improved to 5-3-1 overall. Rochester is 4-3-2. Jaicks made one save for the Yellowjackets. RPI's
Tori Riopelle had five saves for the Engineers.
Both teams had chances to break the 0-0 tie in the second half. RPI's
Sam Lamorte was denied on a breakaway midway through the second period when Rochester's Jen Sitrin poked the ball away after a long pass from over midfield sprang Lamorte down the middle.
Rochester's laura Cowie-Haskell tried a long distance shot from the left sideline with less than 22 minutes left which Riopelle caught at the top left corner of the net.
Emily Eastman's pass sent Winslow towards goal before Sydney Melton shielded her away, then poked the ball free. With eight minutes left, a cross from the wing was grabbed by a diving Riopelle but she dropped it. Paige Gloster tried to lift it into the net but Riopelle dove at it and smothered it before the ball could rise.
The closest either team came to scoring was the 87th minute. RPI earned two consecutive throw-ins deep along the left sideline. On the second throw,
Bethany Hanson found
Rachel Tietzen who wheeled and left-footed the ball halfway up the right post.
Rochester held a 13-8 lead in shots. The Engineers had five corner kicks to none for the Yellowjackets.
