Men's Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep with 3-0 Win Over Cornell

TROY, N.Y. -- Jake Wood scored the first goal of the game, which would prove to be the gamewinner, to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 3-0 win over Cornell in ECAC Men's Hockey action on Saturday evening at Houston Field House. The victory, which completed a conference weekend sweep for the Engineers, improved RPI's record to 9-16-1 overall, and 7-6-0 in league play. Cornell drops to 7-8-2 on the season, with a 5-5-0 conference slate.

After the teams skated to a scoreless first period, Wood (Georgetown, ON / Lincoln Stars) scored RPI's first tally at 7:45 of the second. Wood gathered the rebound from his initial shot that was saved by Cornell starter Mitch Gillam (Peterborough, ON / Chilliwach Chiefs), and slipped it into the net.

The Engineers tallied two goal sin the third period to set the final score. Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON / Cornwall Colts) put Rensselaer up, 2-0, at 3:50. Matt Neal (Minesing, ON / Stoufville Spirit) rocketed a shot into the zone to a waiting Laliberte, who tipped the puck past Gillam. Jared Wilson (Calgary, AB / Vernon Vipers) wrapped up the scoring for the Engineers at 5:38. Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON / Oakville Blades) carried the puck down the ice, passing it off to Wilson at the perfect time, allowing the freshman defenseman to shoot into the opposite corner. Jimmy DeVito (Bloomington, IN / Lincoln Stars) picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

Rensselaer outshot the Big Red, 28-26, while Cornell held a 28-19 advantage in faceoff wins. RPI goaltender Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB / Des Moines Bucs) finished with 26 saves in 60 minutes of action. Gillam recorded 16 saves in 45:38 for Cornell, while reserve netminder Hayden Stewart (Rockford, IL / Indiana Ice) stopped nine opposing shots in 10:38.

RPI returns to action next Saturday, as they take on Route 7 rival Union at the Times Union Center in the annual Mayor's Cup game. Cornell returns to the ice on Friday, taking on Harvard in ECAC Hockey action.
