Mikaela DiBello scored early in the first half and
Rachel Kaufman stopped all four shots she faced as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team defeated the University of Rochester 1-0 in a Liberty League matchup at Ned Harkness Field. The Engineers are now tied with the Yellowjackets for fourth place in the league standings, both at 2-2. Overall RPI is 7-5, while the Yellowjackets are 10-4.
Rensselaer went ahead just 6:23 into the game when DiBello (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac), a freshman, drilled a feed from sophomore
Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME / Waterville) into the back of the cage. The Engineers possessed the ball inside the circle for nearly a minute following a penalty corner and DiBello finished the sequence with her fifth goal of the season. It was RPI's only corner of the half and one of four shots in the frame. The Yellowjackets had three first half corners and seven shots in the first 35 minutes.
RPI refused to sit back in the second half, controlling much of the action in its offensive end of the field. The Engineers generated six second half corners and seven shots in their attempt to build on the lead. One of the best opportunities came off the stick of junior
Claire Cecilio (San Jose, CA / Archbishop Mitty), who was stopped by Rochester senior keeper Tara Lamberti (Penfield, NY / Penfield) off a penalty corner attempt.
Kaufman (Morristown, NJ / Morristown), a freshman, was forced to make two second half saves, both off the stick of senior Michelle Relin (Lititz, PA / Manheim Township), one of the top scorers in the Liberty League, on penalty corner attempts. Relin finished with a game-high four shots including three on goal.
Lamberti finished with five saves in the goal. The shot were even at 11-11 when the horn sounded, with both teams putting five on goal. The Engineers held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Rensselaer returns to action on Sunday at noon against league foe Union College. Rochester plays next on October 20 against Elmira College in a non-league affair at home (6pm).
