Engineers drop Liberty League game to the Saints

CANTON, N.Y. - Freshman Tapshak Augustine scored two goals and added an assist to lead St. Lawrence to a 3-0 win over Rensselaer on Sandy MacAllaster Field on Friday. With the win, the Saints improve to 9-3-2 overall (3-2 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 8-3-3 (1-2-2 Liberty League).

While the Saints offense was dominant in the victory, their defense was nearly impenetrable and held RPI to just two shots in the contest, as the Engineers did not register n attempt in the first half.

Augustine got the Saints on the board in the 10th minute off a free kick by senior Edward Gonzales from 25 yards out. Gonzalez played the ball towards traffic in the far side of the box, it deflected off of Augustine and into space in the middle the box where he finished low inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

He nearly extended the lead to 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the half when a high shot was tipped by RPI goalkeeper Ryan Nealon and seemed to fall into the net, but the assistant referee waved it off immediately and the ball was cleared by the Engineers defense.

It wasn't until the 49th minute that the Saints would gain the two-goal advantage after a beautiful give-and-go between Augustin and sophomore Chandler Short. Augustine dished to Short as he cut down the left wing before the San Diego, Calif. native put a pass through the defense on the six for a finish by Augustine into the lower 90 on the near side.

Charlton Kelly tallied his second of the season with volley from 12 yards out on a cross by Augustine from an endline. Kelly beat Nealon just under the cross bar in the middle of the net for Saints final goal of the game.

St. Lawrence finished with a 24-2 edge in shots and did not concede a corner kick in the match. Ryan Roethelfinished with two saves for the Scarlet and Brown for his ninth shutout of the season. Nealon made eight stops for the Engineers.
