POTSDAM, N.Y. - Three second half goals propelled the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Clarkson University and head coach
Adam Clinton's 133rd at RPI, setting a new school record. The win sends the Engineers to a 9-3-3 overall mark, including 2-2-2 in the Liberty League. Clarkson is now 4-8-2 (1-4-1 Liberty League).
Clinton passes Al Goodyear on the school's all-time wins list. Goodyear had a 132-168-14 record from 1961 to 1986.
The Golden Knights led 1-0 at halftime through a goal by Maximilian Leetz. In the seventh minute, Leetz collected a pass from Jon Jones behind the RPI defense and raced in on the Engineers' goal. He chipped his shot over the dive of
Ryan Nealon for his third goal of the season.
RPI took the lead with two goals in two minutes early in the second half.
Andrew Gondek scored off a scramble in the Clarkson box and then 22 seconds later,
Devon Baughen scored to give RPI a 2-1 lead. Seven minutes later,
Nathaniel Gunderson headed in from close range to give the Engineers an insurance goal.
RPI finished with a 14-5 edge in shots and a 7-3 lead in corner kicks. Riley McDonaldhad two stops in goal for Clarkson with
Ryan Nealon making one stop for Rensselaer.
Clarkson will return to action next Saturday when it plays host to Union at 3pm. The Engineers visit Skidmore on Wednesday (7pm).Â
