SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Rensselaer scored on a counter attack with 13.6 seconds to play in the second overtime for a 1-0 men's soccer win over Skidmore College, Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field. The loss snaps a seven-game unbeaten streak for the 23rd ranked Thoroughbreds who are 9-3-1 overall and 4-1 in Liberty League play. The Engineers are 10-3-3 and 3-2-2.
With time running out, Skidmore had a restart just inside midfield. RPI keeper
Ryan Nealon played a loose ball into midfield, where
Nathaniel Gunderson found
Paul Lentine who got off a hard shot from 22 yards out that found the net for the game winner. It was his fourth goal of the season.
Chances were limited in regulation, but both teams had opportunities in extra time. Lentine almost won it in the first overtime, but Skidmore keeper Eli Kisslebach was able to tip the ball over the crossbar.
The Thoroughbreds had an opportunity in the 105th minute when Augustine Okoye fought off two defenders to get a quality shot off in the box that was saved by Nealon.
RPI had a 15-12 shot advantage. Both teams had four corners.
Kisslebach had five saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Nealon finished with three saves for the Engineers.
Skidmore travels to St. Lawrence on Saturday, while RPI hosts Vassar on Saturday in its final Liberty League game.
