@RPIAthleticsTROY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Dali Alarian scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Clarkson University in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers are now 5-5-6 overall and 1-2-3 in the league, while the Golden Knights are 7-5-2 and 0-4-2.
After falling behind in the 55th minute, RPI controlled the play for the majority of the second half and overtimes. The Engineers had several high-end scoring attempts before finally knotting the score. In the 82nd minute, sophomore
Catie Mann (Downington, PA / Downington) collected a through-ball off a turnover and had a one-on-one with goalie Anna Demasi (Colchester, VT / Lawrence Academy) but shot the ball into the keeper. Three minutes later,
Emily Dunn (Seattle, WA / Ballard) ran the ball up the left side and chipped it to
Cori Winslow (Ballston Spa, NY / Ballston Spa), but her header hit the crossbar. The rebound fell back to Winslow but her next attempt was blocked behind the keeper.
Alarian's (Folsom, CA / Vista del Lago) game-tying penalty kick was set up when
Coley Mowder (Eldersburg, MD / Liberty) sent a long ball to
Stephanie May (Windham, NH / Central Catholic), who got behind the defense and had her jersey pulled while in the box. After a conference among the officials, a penalty kick was awarded and Alarian drove the ball into the upper right corner.
Alarian nearly won the game in the second overtime (109th minute) when she brought the ball in from the left and shot off the post and out of bounds. She had a solid opportunity just one minute earlier when a cross came to her, but her shot was saved by Demasi despite bodies in front.
Clarkson scored the game's first goal when junior Lauren Flynn (Andover, MA / Central Catholic) collected the ball and sent it into the left netting. Summer Gillespie (Morrisonville, NY / Saranac Central), who stopped a clearing attempt, was credited with the assist.
Sophomore
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA / Briar Woods) finished with five saves for RPI, which held a 22-15 edge in shots. Clarkson, which had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, got eight saves from Demasi.
RPI hosts Hartwick College on October 21 at 7:30pm, while the Knights are back on the field on a day before against SUNY Canton (6pm).
