Men's Soccer Tripped Up by Vassar

Brewers capitalize on second half chance to earn road league win

TROY, N.Y. – Tom Wiechert scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lead the Vassar College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Brewers improve to 7-5-2 overall (3-3-0 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 10-4-3 (3-3-2 Liberty League).

Wiechert broke in cleanly behind the RPI defense and lobbed a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Nealon for his seventh goal of the season. The tally broke a 1-1 tie and was the only goal of the second half.

The Engineers, who out-chanced and out-shot the Brewers, were unable to find the equalizing goal over the final nine minutes.

Vassar opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play on Alex Gonzales' first of the campaign. Ben Glasner delivered a right-footed cross from the right flank that Gonzales slotted into the lower right corner of the net on a diving header.

RPI pulled even in the 39th minute on a well struck shot by Devon Baughen from the top of the 18. Baughen darted down the middle of the field, before pulling the trigger on a shot that beat Vassar keeper Sebastien Lasseur.

Nealon finished with one save, while Lasseur had three. The Engineers notched 17 shots to Vassar's nine, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
